People must be so HARD on their equipment! This maker rocks. (2009-05-29)
Wow, I can't believe some of the reviews on this site. What kind of treatment do you people give your equipment, seriously!
It's not made to be a soccer ball, people.
I have had this machine for 6 going on 7 years now, and it still looks entirely brand new, and it's had daily use, sometimes on weekends twice a day.
I drink a LOT of coffee, and I take very good care of my stuff.
Some said the hash marks rub off on the window, mine haven't, and I keep my unit very clean. They must be taking grinders to it or something.
Also, the hinge on the water reservior has not broken. I don't get what people do to these things, mine is fine after 7 years.
I have no problem pouring with my unit either, it doesn't dribble at all. I pour slowly to enjoy the aroma, maybe they are trying to just throw it in the cup, who knows.
The LED timer and clock have always worked great, never had any problem, always nice to have fresh coffee DONE when you get up. Maybe they are soaking the machine in water!
The coffee tastes fine from it, and I have had many other makers before, this one is no better or worse. It doesn't taste like plastic, how can it the water makes contact with plastic for about two seconds, then goes through a hose into the grounds and into the carafe.
Nothing on it is awkward at all, like the removable basket. You aren't supposed to pry on it! Mine has not broken on the swivel.
Actually it has a lot of nice little features and bells and whistles like the Flavor Select from mild to strong and the Sneak-A-Cup so you can have a cup before it's done brewing without dripping coffee all over the hot plate.
The two hour auto shut-off is also awesome so you won't boil down a pot all day long and then end up ruining your carafe along with smelling up the house will burnt coffee aroma. You can also just hit "On" again and reset the two hour timer. VERY nice feature.
Putting the carafe under the Sneak-A-Cup isn't hard either, it doesn't require two hands. Mine is also not stained, I clean it.
Coffee doesn't take 1/2 hour to brew, 12 cups is done within 10 minutes easily and stays very hot all the way through.
It has also never spit water out anywhere from anything.
Really, I don't know what product these people have been reviewing! I think this pot is the best one I have ever had, with so many cool little extras about it.
I just had to come counter a little because people are trashing it and it does not deserve it. I am wondering how long mine will last, it's already a venerable guy, I can't wait to see.
Get real, people! (2007-01-29)
I do not purport to be a coffee aficionado, ok? I don't grind my own beans, I don't use agua dulce mountain spring water with a specific pH, and Kirkland Colombian in a can suits me just fine, thank you.
That said, I do appreciate a reliable, simple-to-use coffee maker that's easy on the frilly bells/whistles and easy to clean (yeah, like that happens very often). Thank ____ (you fill in the blank) for inventing easily-disposed paper filters so that I am not tasked with a daily cleaning of a yuppie-gold filter -- what a PITA that must be, huh? -- and the coffee maker manufacturers that are common sense-oriented enough to use them. And did I mention value-priced?? Ok, cheap.
So in my view, this little B&D fills all the bills and works quite well. I have almost never encountered a spillage problem (see below) and I can't imagine why anyone would say, "Ewww, it makes yucky tasting coffee". No, it doesn't! It tastes fine -- what's your problem??
It has a nice little clock/timer that I don't have to ask my child how to operate, the pour interrupt works well, the basket swivel hasn't fallen off so far, and yes, it IS easy to clean!
What really grinds my cookies, though, is that I can't seem to find a replacement carafe (did I spell that right, Buffy?) or "pot" since my ham-handed attempt in proper "carafe replacement technique" resulted in a miss which resulted in a crack which now results in a leak. Durn.
So I hope to buy yet another of these poor, maligned little machines cause I think they're just swell. If I can find one, that is.
Hey, anybody want to sell me theirs??
$20 a year for coffee (2005-12-13)
I am rating this higher than I normally would because of all the unfairly low ratings I see here. This machine is far from perfect, but for the price I don't expect much other than it work.
Let me caveat that almost all of the negatives written are true, but they need to be taken in perspective. We have owned 3 of these and are in the process of looking for a replacement. I will probably end up with a 4th for the lack of anything better that has the features we like. These are the negatives that I have personally experienced:
Poor Quality Control - (why I buy these locally and keep the receipts)
Dribbling - Absolutely, it takes practice to pour without spilling, but it can be done
Short life - ditto, I have decided to consider these disposables with a 1 year working life
Other than those foibles these have worked well for us, and by the way, the comment about B&D Coffeemakers rating poorly with Consumer Reports is not true (at least with any current report I have been able to find).
My main reasons for buying (and re-buying these)
Cheap (good since I plan on throwing one away every 12-18 months)
Replacement Brewing Baskets and Carafes (I save these from the discards each year)
Auto Shut-off (THIS IS CRITICAL FOR ME, we have friends who lost their house to a coffee maker fire)
